8 worldwide opportunities with deadlines in February

Are you still trying to figure out what new skill you want to learn this year or what will be the next step in your career in 2023? Our list of fellowships, grants and workshops has you covered, and they’re all open to journalists globally:

Mobile film festival 

Deadline: February 4, 2023

The Mobile Filmmaker’s International Festival is accepting entries from professional and amateur filmmakers. Submissions must be from one to 60 minutes long, and be in English or include English subtitles. Winners in each category will receive prizes.

Journalism fellowship

Deadline: February 6, 2023

Mid-career journalists can apply for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s Journalist Fellowship Program. Fellows will get the chance to critically reflect upon their profession, research a subject of their choice and more. Applicants must have at least five years of journalism experience and strong English skills.

Environmental reporting workshop

Deadline: February 6, 2023

The Metcalf Institute has opened applications for its Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists. Attendees will receive a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of research practice, climate science and more. Reporters of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Press freedom contest

Deadline: February 15, 2023

Journalists, organizations or institutions that promote press freedom can be nominated for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Nominations must be in English or French and include a brief biography or history of the nominee. Winners will receive a US$25,000 award.

Environmental journalism program

Deadline: February 15, 2023

The Logan Science Journalism Program at the University of Chicago’s Marine Biological Laboratory is organizing two workshops for science and environmental journalists interested in learning about basic biomedical and environmental research. At least three years of journalism experience is required to apply.

Partnership program 

Deadline: February 20, 2023

Local newsrooms around the world can now apply to Report for the World’s partnership program, which pairs newsrooms with talented emerging journalists to report on underreported issues. Participants will receive mentoring and more.

Photography grants

Deadline: February 21, 2023

Photographers Without Borders is accepting entries for its Revolutionary Storyteller Grant. Five photography projects with a strong call to action for land and/or water protection will be selected and receive a US$5,000 grant.

Reporting award

Deadline: February 21, 2023

Journalists working on an underreported project in the public interest can apply for New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute’s reporting award. Winners will receive up to US$12,500, an office and more.
